Wine of Marcillac and Climate

Vignobles Aveyronnais

The vineyard is located 20 km north-west of Rodez. The production area covers the communes of Marcillac Vallon, Balsac, Clairvaux, Goutrens, Mouret, Nauviale, Pruines, Salles-la-Source, Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou, Saint-Christophe-Vallon and Valady.

This vineyard of Marcillac spreads out in a maze of hillsides, dug by the rivulets of the Créneau and the Ady, with waters reddened by the dark brick earth of the valley. The area of the Marcillac rougiers constitutes a depression in the surrounding landscape. The plots are located on sloping hillsides and  terraced, when the slope of the land is really too steep. This set of plots forms a kind of amphitheater, oriented towards south, allowing good ripeness to the grape. Since the 9th century, the vinegrowers cultivate their art on steep slopes of the Rougier, where the vines are planted. This makes it possible to measure the ingenuity of these winegrowers at any time. In other words, this terroir is unique by the labyrinth of these hillsides, and of these enclosed valleys. Knowing that 65% of vines are planted on these steep slopes. This Rougier du Vallon is implanted on red-clay, with presence of iron oxide, which gives a unique specificity to the varietal of Marcillac.

Climate

Variable climate throughout the seasons, the semi-continental influences in winter and Mediterranean in summer are felt. However, the annual sunshine is at a notable level, ie about 2200 hours / year. We very often witness very harsh winters and very hot and sunny summers, worthy of the cities around the Mediterranean. (Temperature of Rodez, because the vineyard of Marcillac is located at 20 km from it)
